Light and art for the revival of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena ai Cristallini
In the heart of the Rione Sanità in Naples, the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena ai Cristallini has been brought back to life thanks to an urban regeneration project promoted by the Cooperative “La Paranza”. After years of neglect, the building has been transformed into a genuine contemporary art space, a symbol of social and community redemption.
The interior of the church has been entirely repainted in blue by the neighborhood’s youth, creating an immersive and evocative environment. The murals created by internationally renowned artists depict the faces of the Rione’s inhabitants, giving them visibility and recognition through art.
In such an evocative context, lighting played a crucial role in enhancing the depth of the interiors and highlighting the various shades of blue that make up the portraits. The lighting design project focused on solutions that enhance color contrasts and pictorial details, creating an intense and engaging atmosphere.
The use of fixtures with high color rendering sources allowed the vividness of the colors to emerge, ensuring perfect perception of the shades and light effects on the painted surfaces. Thanks to an accurate distribution of light points, it was possible to strengthen the emotional impact of the works and guide visitors’ gaze along the visual path created by the artists.
