Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples

Rimani had the honor of working on a lighting project for the historic Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples, a place of great cultural and religious significance. The main request was to create an evocative atmosphere capable of highlighting the intricate geometries of the underground spaces while simultaneously developing conservation lighting to counter the serious issue of phyto-proliferation. This latter issue, in fact, finds a fertile ground for extensive and potentially harmful growth to the historical structures in artificial lights.

Our first step was to identify a light spectrum that would effectively limit this phenomenon. After extensive research, we chose an ideal light source that, in addition to enhancing the environments, was able to minimize plant proliferation.

This source was integrated into an IP65 projector (model Rain), which offers the possibility of modifying the beam angle through the use of self-centering magnetic secondary lenses. This advanced technology allows for great flexibility during the installation phase on site, ensuring precise and adaptable lighting to the various needs of the catacombs’ environments.

The result achieved is lighting that not only highlights the historical and artistic beauties of the Catacombs of San Gennaro, but also respects the need for site conservation. Thanks to this project, Rimani has contributed to preserving an invaluable heritage, offering visitors an exciting visual experience while simultaneously protecting the delicacy of the site. We are proud to have been able to combine technological innovation and respect for history in a project of such significance.
